2004 Recognition of International Students

The goal of all international students at EKU is to complete an academic program and earn a degree. The following international students are listing in the Spring Semester Graduation Program and are applauded for the excellent work.

The following students have earned special recognition for their excellent work in a variety of areas


Rushda Majeed was awarded first Student Life Presidential Leadership Award by President Joanne Glasser. This was the highest award given for student leadership for 2003-2004 by EKU. Rushda was also inducted into Who's Who and also received the Dean's Award of Merit, recognizing her as an outstanding senior who has excelled academically.

Smriti Pande was named EKU Student Employee of the Year. Smriti was also featured in the "Who's That?" column in the Eastern Progress. Also nominated for this award were international students Dolores Couch, Mellani Lefta, Alin Tose, and Liang Zhou.

Sanjita Thapa Chhetri was named Student Government Association Student Senator of the Year. Last year Sanjita was able to get a $500 appropriation for ISA. This year she got a $2000 appropriation for ISA. Sanjita was elected to serve as student senator for 2004-2005.

Maki Takahashi who received the Phi Kappa Phi Martin Award from EKU. This is an award for a non-traditional student who keeps a good GPA. Maki also had two art projects were accepted by an outside judge to be shown in the Art Student Association Juried Show from April 11 to April 21, 2004, at the Giles Gallery in the Jane Campbell Building. She showed a fruit bowl titled "Breath of Fresh Air." She also carved fruits and vegetables on site at the Gallery in the royal Thai style at the Art Gallery. Maki also showed her edible books at the Center of Book Arts in New York City and the other at the Center of Book and Paper Arts in Chicago. This was a world-wide event called Edible Books held on April 01, 2004. Her "books" were well received and were used to generate fund for library-related events. She made gingerbread cookies fully decorated with Celtic patterns.

Rachel Dawson received the Association of General Contractors/Richard Brooker Award for academic excellence

Eun-young You who received Second Place Gold Circle Award in Info Graphics from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Columbia University, NYC.

Steve Maina, named OVC Male Track Athlete of the Week.

Eun-young You, Maki Takahashi, and Rene Ndzi were presentors at the Undergraduate Presentation Showcase in Keen Johnson.

Prageeth Hettiarachchi, Noemi Kudrass and Ricardo Valencia recently performed in the EKU Dance Theater Concert.

Dolores Couch, Paris Liang, and Mariko Yamakura were on a panel for Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Women educators of Kentucky) on
Saturday. Their photos appeared in the Richmond Register participating in this event.

Mustapha Bojang and Tichaedza Chikuni were appointed 2004 Orientation leaders.
